Native to Sonoma County, I have always been drawn to the Redwoods here on the California coast. The majority of the wood I work with are pieces that would otherwise have been discarded. I have a great respect for trees and infuse my work with reverence. I've done many pieces that I hope reflect this. Some years ago a friend had to remove a tree from their property. I felt a sadness about this and decided to carve a sculpture out of the trees trunk. I then returned it to the land to, in a small way, reconcile the harm done. The sculpture still stands on the ridge and serves as a reminder to always give something back. I feel art dedicated to wounded places can be a bridge to healing. This is the kind of affection I try give to each piece I create. By working with the woods grain and organic characteristics I try to capture as much of its natural beauty as possible. My hope is that through art we humans can find deeper connections to beauty, to each other, and the world we share.
